Sarah Nicholson on Writer's Block, Writing and Her First Book @EvolutionWoman #AmWriting

What inspired you to write your first book?
The driving force behind the writing of  The Evolutionary Journey of Woman: From the Goddess to Integral Feminism were questions that emerged in me after having an unexpected spiritual awakening in the midst of my party focused early twenties. I was playing around in the world of underground trance dance and psychedelic parties and suddenly found myself not just having profound state experiences but asking  the big questions of who I was and what it was to be human. But I found that I could not begin to engaging these big spiritual and philosophical inquiries without asking why these questions had traditionally been both asked and answered by men.

Have you ever had writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it?
Yes. I had a long period after finishing my PhD where I was totally burnt out. I also, periodically, suffer from writer's procrastination. While I think there is much to be said with just turning up and writing, I also like to consider these 'pauses' in terms of what has been called Kairos time. That is, a space in which ideas are being allowed to marinate until the timing is right for their emergence.

Who is your publisher?
The Evolutionary Journey of Woman: From the Goddess to Integral Feminism is published by boutique American press Integral Publishers. My next book, a co-edited anthology Integral Voices on Sex, Gender and Sexuality is published by the State University of New York Press (SUNY).

Did you learn anything from writing this book?
I learnt that women's history has been compromised for two reasons. On one hand women have been creating, teaching, producing and innovating forever,  but their achievements have been under recognized. They been ignored, or lost, or hidden or repressed; on the other hand, women have been marginalized and prevented from these same opportunities to achieve. These two realities exist side by side.

What books have most influenced your life?
I count Clarissa Pinkola Estesphemonenal women's soul classicWomen Who Run With the Wolves as a book of great value and influence. In this book Pinkola Estes has drawn on her  twenty years of practice as a  Jungian psychoanalyst, as well as her history as a cantadora (keeper of the old stories), and you can tell. She beautifully weaves together, retells and explores the deep symbols of folklore and fairy tales with the desire of reigniting the lost sparks of women's intuitive and instinctive life.

Who is your favorite author and why?
Joseph Campbell. He was a remarkable scholar who examined mythology, religion and literature from around the world and saw in them a single unify story about the human journey. His writing is genuinely accessible and you can feel his love of teaching and great soulfulness.  His writing has been a key source of inspiration, illumination and joy for me and I count him as a soul grandfather.

Can we expect any more books from you in the future?
You definitely can!

What are your current writing projects now?
I am in the process of writing a novel. Currently called Terma and is the story of Nin, a young Sumerian girl who, after being recognized for her special powers of divination, is sent to the newly emerging city of Ur to train as a priestess at the temple of Inanna. Terma is also the story of Liz  who, in 2020 London,  is bequeathed with an archaeological mystery. Terma is one part historical fiction, one part fantasy, one part sci-fi mystery and a whole heartedly, woman focused, page turner.

Are you reading any interesting books at the moment?
I am reading Sera Beak's Red, Hot and Holy. It is a wonderfully outrageous, playful, and soulful, spiritual memoir and I'm finding it is quite a journey to take with her!

Are there any new authors that have sparked your interest and why?
I recently read The Burial by new Australian author Courtney Collins. Her book is an exploration via historical fiction of a female bushranger (a type of outlaw or runaway convict in the Australian bush in early colonial times). It’s a wonderful read; combining an amazing true story with a strong heroine and told through rich, spell binding language.

evolutionaryJourney

The story of human evolution that we've been commonly told is one built on the shoulders of male heroism, competition and dominance; but, what if it isn't the whole story? This book tells the lost story of women in evolution.

The Evolutionary Journey of Woman: From the Goddess to Integral Feminism looks towards a future that brings together and reintegrates women's wisdom traditions through establishing a spiritual lineage for women that is traced all the way back to ancient Sumer with the goddess Inanna. Marrying the ancient wisdom traditions with adult developmental theory, this book charts a pathway towards the full spectrum of possibilities for women's self-actualisation in the coming Integral age. The Evolutionary Journey of Woman is academically rigorous, historical, philosophical and spiritual, but, most fundamentally, it is a narrative that will change the way you think about woman as a heroine of history.

Confessions of a Time Traveler

What if you had a chance to do it over again? By “it”, I mean your life. What if you could go back in time and make a different choice? Right a wrong. Say “yes” instead of saying “no” or vice versa. Would you do it? I’m not offering, I don’t really have a time machine; just a very vivid imagination and a wisdom born from lessons learned the hard way. So indulge me for a moment while I take a ride back in time, ten years ago to be exact and find that younger version of me, sit her down and give myself the advice only the future me could provide.

Eat Better
As cliché as it may sound, the first thing I would tell myself is, “You’ve got to eat more vegetables, preferably raw. I know, I know, you’re in a season where you can eat a cheeseburger everyday, three times a day and it has no affect whatsoever on your weight or immediate well-being but trust me it will. Ten years from now when your hormones change and things slow down you will wish like heck that you started eating healthier sooner. So take my advice and do it today”.

Save Money
Ten years ago, a great pair of shoes had just as much importance as my rent. Ten years later, I know better. The second thing I would tell myself is to save money. “No matter how hard it seems, no matter what budget you may be on at the moment, each week, every pay check, put away some money. Gaining discipline over your finances will be an immeasurable help to you in the future and for years to come”.

Be Fearless
The lesson that I would absolutely impart to my younger self is to never let fear motivate any of my decisions. “Don’t say “yes” to something just because you’re afraid you will never get the chance again. Don’t say “no” just because you’re afraid of what might happen. Follow your joy and let peace be your guide. When you pursue your passion and walk in your purpose, you will not go wrong”.

Seize the Day
Ten years ago my goal was to be fluent in Spanish. Ten years later, I still have that same goal. The reason why I’m not fluent in Spanish is because I kept putting it off for some day. Some day I will have more time, some day I will find the perfect teacher. Some day never came. I would tell my younger self that “some day” is not a day of the week and anything that is worth experiencing is worth making time for. Seize the day!

Then I would give myself a hug and say, “Hey, even though you’re learning some lessons the hard way, your future is bright. You married a great guy, you wrote an awesome book and that was just the beginning…”

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio and raised in the Bay Area of Northern California, Erin grew up with an innate love for dance, theatre and the written word. A graduate of Loyola Marymount University, Erin began her career in the arts as an actress and choreographer. After booking several notable roles in television and film, Erin began to use her gift of writing in blogs featuring political and social commentary, as well as developing content for theatrical use.

Although The Dunes, is a divine departure from Erin’s previous writings it is by far her most cherished work to date. “I wrote The Dunes initially as self therapy because I needed to release some painful experiences and disappointments from my past. I had this thirst to walk in the complete fullness of life with joy as my constant companion. I had no idea what effect it would have on other people. But when I saw people read it and be released from fears that had held them back for years…when I saw people forgive and be able to walk in the freedom forgiveness brings…when I saw people commit and serve and how those things opened up new opportunities in their life, I was just humbled. Humbled by the awesome power of God and humbled that I had been allowed to go along for the ride”.

When asked why she writes, Erin pauses and reflects on the truth of her heart. “I write because although I am only now beginning to truly love the process, I have always loved the outcome. Like a composer, words become my notes. I string them together in song eliciting the response of my reader, grafting a picture of my soul. Where besides the written word can you effect change so utterly and so succinctly? What besides the written word can pierce the universal collective mind? Everything begins with a thought, but it isn’t until that thought is articulated in written word and those words passed down can life changing movement happen. It must be written, it must be expressed on tablet, and when it is, we all become greater, whether the writing be genius or fatuity, it has evoked thought and debate. Why wouldn’t I want to be apart of that phenomenon? Why wouldn’t I want to share my story, give my testimony…add my paradigm to the mix? Whether it is a novel, a poem, an essay or an article, it is humanity visited. An insight into a new or sometimes shared truth. In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God and the word was God. And with that I live my life”.

Dune

If there was a journey that could masterfully change your life in seven revelations...would you take it?

In life, sometimes the kernels of wisdom and the richness of revelation can be found in the most innocent of stories; and so it is with The Dunes. Join one man and one woman in an exquisitely simple yet remarkably profound journey as you discover with them that the mountain you must climb in order to live the abundant life of your dreams is located squarely within your heart.

Illuminated in seven revelations; The Dunes carries the reader on a journey to not only examine the obstacles that are holding them back in life but to conquer and over come them as well. In the family of faith-based self help books, The Dunes stands alone, simultaneously taking the reader from fiction to life and back again, equipped with a tailor made journal for the readers inner most secrets and reflections. The Dunes is part allegory, part testimony and part journal, but the best part is the healing it offers your heart. @KentBurden's #WriteTip for Deciding What You’re Going to Write #Wellness #AmWriting

I often get the question “how do you decide what you’re going to write about?” it’s a pretty valid question, unlike someone who writes fiction I don’t have to come up with a story or a plot I just have to come up with a subject, but what subject? As a health and wellness expert my choices are endless, exercise, stress reduction, weight loss, nutrition and all the sub categories that go along with healthy living. But how do you decide what to spend your valuable time and energy writing when we all know that some books will sell and some won’t. How to chose a topic that people will want to buy and will be something I want to delve deeply into. I’ve written 7 books (and counting) and I’ve chosen subjects based on key word searches, surveys, market research and a coin flip. But sometimes a topic just chooses you.
A few years ago while working at a high end California spa,  I was sitting at my desk in my office reading a popular men’s magazine (I was on my break– I swear) when I came across an article that said new research proved that sitting for extended periods of time increased your risk of getting diseases like diabetes, heart disease obesity and certain forms of cancer and that doing 30-60 minutes of exercise a day wasn’t enough to counteract the damage that sitting did. The article even claimed that as far as negative health effects were concerned, sitting was just as bad as smoking! To top it off it stated that people who sat more during the day were heavier than people who moved around and spent more time standing during the day regardless of how much they exercised.
I remember sitting there feeling like I had just been kicked in the crotch by Chuck Liddell. This is not what they had taught me in my six years of college. It’s not in the literature they give you for your personal trainer certification and no one was talking about this at fitness conferences. This had to be complete and utter bull s#!t. So I did some research myself and what I found shocked me, and the deeper I dug the more I began to think this new discovery might just have merit.
The first thing I did was go back through my records. As a trainer you always have clients that trouble you. They work hard in their sessions, say their doing all the things you tell them to do on their own, insist they are sticking to their diet program, but never can get to the goal weight loss they set or they can’t seem to get their blood work numbers were they need to be. I always chalked it up to the “they think they are but there not syndrome”. Many people fool themselves into thinking they are doing things that they aren’t actually doing, you’ve seen it. The person who says they eat healthy but over the course of the day eats 20 mini Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups from the office candy dish and then scarf down half a quart of Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey Ice Cream while watching Game Of Thrones just before bed. But maybe I was wrong, maybe they had been doing everything I had been telling them to do but what I was telling them to do just wasn’t enough. Low and behold when I checked all of my trouble clients had jobs like accountant, lawyer, software designer and author all jobs that had them sitting all day long.
I called a couple of the researchers that had been quoted in the article and came away with the distinct feeling that this was big. I mean the-sky-is-falling big. This was when I decided I HAD to write the book. I pulled together all the research I could find, I talked to all the major players in the field. I collected opinions on how best to counteract the deadly effects of prolonged sitting,  then created movements that could be done anywhere (even in the office) so people could discover new ways to be healthy. For me the hardest part was figuring out how to make all these facts and medical research interesting enough to actually read. The bottom line is I was on fire!  I needed to spread the word and get these simple, effective tools into people’s hands. That’s how my book, “Is Your Chair Killing You? A Healthier You in 8 Minutes a Day” was born. No market research, no key word searches and no coin flips. It also happens to be my bestselling book so far. Things that make you go hmmmmm.

Sitting for extended periods of time is as bad for your health as smoking cigarettes. And exercising for 30-60 minutes a day isn’t enough to undo the damage from extended periods of sitting. Is Your Chair Killing You reveals shocking new research showing that sitting for long periods greatly increases your risk of developing obesity, heart disease, diabetes, stroke and cancer. Our bodies were designed to move constantly over the course of the day, but most of us sit for hours a day at work and at home! Fitness and wellness expert and award-winning author Kent Burden has created brief, simple movements you can incorporate into your daily life to combat the damaging effects of sitting. These simple movements, done standing for 1-5 minutes each hour will burn calories, energize and refresh you, and you won’t even break a sweat; you’ll even improve your back pain. This book is a how-to for weight loss and disease prevention. Read this book–you’ll be healthier in as little as 8 minutes a day.

Carlos Aranda 's #WriteTip for What to Look for in a #Publisher @Losman1976 #BookMarketing

Now there are many options when it comes to getting published. I will start with what I know most about and that is traditional publishers. There are very few these days that have open submission. Most traditional publishers today require that you go through a literary agent first. The only issue that I have with going with an agent is that, this in one more person cutting into the profits from your book. The advantage to using an agent is getting your book into a better company that will make up for the extra percentage by making sure that your book is making the most money possible. For a traditional publisher taking open submissions, there are a few things to check out before your submit and sign on the dotted line so to speak. First is this company a legitimate company that has a good reputation with others as well as part of the Better Business Bureau. There are some companies out there that market themselves as a traditional publisher yet are just what they call a vanity press. They look good but the final cost you have to pay for their services is just ridiculous. For the publisher I went with, Tate Publishing, they required a retainer for my publicist which the price was negotiable and is returned to you once you have sold 1,000 copies with them.

The second thing with choosing traditional publishers is finding the one with the best royalty rate. There are some that will give you a very low royalty rate so that they make the majority of the money from the book rather than being fair and giving their authors a fair amount, considering that you did all the work really. Finally for traditional publishers you need to see what kind of marketing they are going to be doing on their end as well as the markets that they can present your book in. That is one advantage that I have learned about traditional versus self-publishing.

A traditional publisher has markets that self-publishing cannot get into as a lot of companies will not acknowledge them, regardless of how wonderful the book really is. Now for self-publishing I don’t know that much about it. I do know that you need to really research each option and find which one is going to best suit your needs. You need to look at final cost, editing and if there is any help with some marketing of your book.

I have found that there are indeed a few companies that do help with distribution and marketing of your book depending on what kind of budget you are looking at to get published. No matter what choice you decide to go with don’t just jump into the first opportunity that comes your way. Research and find the best choice that will suit you and your needs the best. Sometimes that first option is not always the best option.

Stay Sane While #Writing Your First #Book by South Africa’s Top Psychic @ShannonWalbran #TBR

10 Ways to Stay Sane While Writing Your First Book: What Worked for Me by Radio Host, Author, and South Africa’s Top Psychic Shannon Walbran
When you’re in the zone, write for as long as you can, and when it fizzles, make a clean break and get out.  Go to the movies and choose a genre/environment totally different from your book’s.
You don’t write a whole book at one go. Break it into manageable bits. Write it chapter by chapter. Later, you can merge chapters, re-arrange them, or delete them if needed.
Be careful about choosing friends who will read drafts, and give them specific criteria: “At this point I’m looking for story flow. I don’t need grammar or spelling help right now.” IF someone gives you an unkind critique in an early draft, don’t ask that person for “help” again.
Imagine a wildly enthusiastic audience.  Create the most loving reader who will eat up your every word. Name her (“my beloved, favourite, biggest fan Aunt Eleanor”). There will be enough “no’s” in this journey. Find some yeses early on.
Imperfection is Perfection. Every writing teacher says this, from Anne Lamotte (who calls them “sh*tty first drafts”) to Julia Cameron to Writing down the bones. It’s true. Get the words onto the screen. Now.  Repeat yourself, blather on, spell things wrong, use the wrong vocabulary (“really big” when you’re hoping for “immense”). Don’t try to sound smart, download as if you’ve got a bandwidth pipe as big as Tokyo’s. #Nofilter
Stop checking your email. Or your Facebook, your Twitter, or your phone. Turn it all off. When you set a writing date with yourself, stick to it as if you’re having your last lunch with your lover who’s moving overseas. Stay dedicated.
Back it up. In the cloud, or whatever the future equivalent is. Email it to yourself. When the manuscript is close to finished, print out a hard copy and bind it so that you’ll always have a version in case the rapture comes.
Don’t edit on the same day that you wrote. Let it sit. A cake only bakes when the oven door is closed.
To edit, print it out on paper. Read it in a totally different place from where you wrote it - walk to a park with a sheaf of papers and a pen. Don’t edit on-screen or you could delete a lovely passage out of irritation and impatience (not that this ever happened to me…)
Guided
In GUIDED! Shannon combines practical how-to’s and case studies with magical worldwide adventures, reminiscent of Elizabeth Gifford’s Eat, Pray, Love and Sonia Choquette’s Trust Your Vibes.
Shannon’s voice in GUIDED! How to Communicate with Your Spirit Guides is as strong and bright as her personality. Her concise and ‘to the point’ method of writing is refreshing.
In the biography section of the book, Shannon is candid about her tumultuous journey, which includes much sadness and hardship. She writes with empathy.
There are two main sections to the book:
Part I – Ways to Hear from your Guides – is practical and describes in detail how to make a connection with your angelic helpers.
Part II is an inspiring biography of Shannon’s life and is as entertaining as it is informative.

Obedience #Prayer by Nina Elaine Borum @TrinityGalBlog #Christian #Excerpt #AmReading

Father, this morning I lift up ____________________ to your throne. Ignite him for action in your kingdom and give him discipline in your ways. Make him sober-minded and set his hope fully on your grace. Make him obedient and give him the strength to turn away from the lusts that easily entangle men of God. Call him to be holy as you are holy. In obedience to your commands may he be holy in all he does and says this day. Give him a love for you that is shown in his obedience towards your commandments. Empower him to love others as you have commanded that he would receive his full reward from you. May he always remain in you and obey your teachings.

praying
You didn't learn these prayers in Sunday school. Put your armor on, and get ready to see God move!
Do you ever get sick of praying? It's okay to admit. We all do. It is emotionally draining to beg God without ceasing. Christians often forget that under Christ's authority, we have the power to command God's promises to be released from heaven to earth and into our lives.
In Praying for Men of P.O.W.E.R., author Nina Elaine Borum challenges readers to stand confidently and command the promises of God for the men in your life. As someone who has struggled with prayer, Nina believes that God does not intend for his children to feel helpless in praying. His Word has instructed us in how to bring the kingdom of heaven to a world where Satan runs freely. We are all in the midst of a vicious spiritual battle, and Nina hopes this book will help you to fight on behalf of Christian men.

Stories from the Sisterwives #Excerpt by Emily Brown @muddyatwood #memoir #amreading

The Dark Prince made his first appearance in my life at the end of July 2011. At the time, I was a Special Education Teacher, and as such, the end of summer was my high season - high stress, high priority, high needs, high anxiety, high anticipation. It’s a real mess going back to school. So, why not add dating to the mix? I nobly had been attempting online dating, and I had adapted the Dan Savage campsite rule for my situation; “Leave ‘em better than you found ‘em.” For me, this meant if a man took the time to contact me, not just wink at me or whatever obnoxious term was applied to gutless flirting, I would take equal time and reply whether I was interested or not. I felt an obligation of decency with these men. Doesn’t it pay to be polite? I mean, karmically, I should have been rolling in it eagerly awaiting the rewards of my polite good deeds. If these exchanges were happening in person, I would never sit through a conversation mute. Well, I probably would never sit through a conversation mute, but I’m really not comfortable using the word never.
If you have never attempted online dating, it is much like taking on another job. It quickly becomes an obsession and turns compulsive tendencies into out-and-out disabilities. You have to manage who has viewed your profile, how many times you are viewed, whom you find interesting, whom you have contacted, who hasn’t responded, what your responses say, and in sum, it plays into any and all insecurities that landed you online dating in the first place.
I was managing four different men. Typically, I’m attracted to smart, funny, artistic, liberal, big personalities. Present errors in grammar and spelling, I would proceed to behead these suitors like Alice in Wonderland’s Queen of Hearts, dumping their words unceremoniously in the trash. Likewise was the fate of the intrepid man who tried to talk to me if his religious, political or personal interests did not jibe with my own. In my attempt for true love, this time around I was broadening my palate. I was trying to be be more open and accepting of men I normally would dismiss. Maybe I needed something different than what I thought I wanted. Why? I don’t know. I was a mess.
I had convinced myself there didn’t exist a man capable of loving me the way I wanted to be loved. And really, why should there be? I had no idea of what I wanted or even what that love would look like. I was so detached from myself, all I knew for sure was that I was in my late 30s, never married, childless and living in the Midwest, and that was one too many criteria in the “You May Need to Be Settling If...” column. Somehow I thought that by venturing out of my comfort zone, I would find something appealing. What I had liked in the past had not worked out, and I was entering this search with the determination of Sisyphus. Why didn’t I remember how that story played out?
stories_sisterwives
Emily Brown was a single woman in her mid-30s living in the Midwest when a Dark Prince found her online dating profile. Fearing it was now or never, she relented to his persistent persuasion and immediately began ignoring the instinctual pulls telling her something wasn't right. Their tawdry relationship centered around guilt, shame and withholding served up by the Dark Prince until Emily put her foot down. Well, actually, she put her foot in his backpack. And that showed her all she needed to know.
Emily shares the painful discovery of how the man she loved was sharing his life with other women, how she went on to befriend her "Sisterwife," and how she found herself again. “Stories from the Sisterwives” is the remarkable true story of heartbreak, friendship, love and triumph over the darkness.
